Market Recap of the Week of Jan 18, 2026 - Jan 25, 2026

Overall Market Trends:
The stock market fell significantly to start the week, but rebounded throughout, though all four major indices still finished with minor losses. The New York Stock Exchange Composite (NYSE) fell 55 points (-0.24%), the S&P 500 declined 24 points (-0.35%), the NASDAQ Composite slipped 16 points (-0.07%), and the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a weekly loss of 263 points (-0.53%). These results were largely swayed by geopolitical concerns regarding Denmark’s Greenland territory.
Stocks fell sharply on Tuesday after President Trump escalated his rhetoric regarding Greenland. Trump mentioned potentially buying the Danish territory back in 2019 during his first Presidential term, though the Danish Prime Minister shut down the proposal. However, in his recent campaign and term, he has reignited the idea of acquiring the territory, now taking a stronger stance by threatening to impose new tariffs on countries that would oppose the acquisition. In response, U.S. treasuries rose, and the dollar declined.
The market reversed on Wednesday as a new deal was supposedly reached between Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, outlining the framework for a future deal involving Greenland. Trump subsequently called off the tariffs that were tied to the Greenland acquisition set to be imposed on Feb 1, resulting in the spike.
This sentiment persisted into Thursday’s trading session, with all four major indices continuing to rise throughout the day.
The market ended Friday’s session mixed: the NASDAQ rose while the Dow underperformed. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) plummeted roughly 17% due to disappointing first-quarter guidance.
